News
This spring and summer mark many upcoming changes for me and my practice.
- In March, I left my role at the Smithsonian, which I held for almost 10 years, to give myself studio time before I begin a new adventure (continue reading to find out what that is).
- In June, I will attend a marble-carving residency in Gramolazzo, Italy. The residency combines 3D CNC carving using robots with traditional hand carving techniques.
- In August, I will begin a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Interactive Design position at James Madison University.
And more to come! Stay tuned!

Combinations, a collaborative art project at Artomatic
For Artomatic, D.C.-based artists Michelle Lisa Herman and Robin Bell teamed up to create a series of pieces that combine their individual work by photographing and filming objects in the same space in which they are now exhibiting.
All prints and videos are available to purchase. The prints are a limited print-to-order series ($150 unframed and $400 framed) that will be available from March 8 to April 28, 2024. There will be a limit of 10 editions of each.

Limina at the Delaware Contemporary Museum June 7–August 25
I have been invited to participate in an invitational group show at the Delaware Contemporary Museum that opens June 7. The exhibition, Limina, explores the sense of subtle disorientation felt during a period of transition. As we stand on the threshold of an uncertain future, familiar objects & places become increasingly surreal. We exist between the continuity of our previous experiences while proceeding into the unknown. The location and sensation between those destinations is described as “liminal space”.
Liminal–from the Latin limen, meaning threshold–describes a physical, emotional, or temporal place of transition. Eerie, forlorn, surreal, disconcerting, yet somehow still nostalgic and familiar; the liminal is the perfect metaphor for life’s manifold nature. The liminal can be both abstract and concrete–it is everywhere, yet nowhere at the same time. It is the name we give to the negative spaces in the world around us that ordinarily go unnoticed and undefined.
