Untitled (Invisible / Visible) #3 and the Untitled (Legs, Lips, and Lines) series were created in response to misogynistic advertising from the 1960s by a company called Optical Scanning Corporation, which referred to a company’s team of women computer programmers as “16 legs, 8 waggly tongues,” that “cost you at least $40,000 a year.” Their ads were just one small part of a systematic effort to push women out of the computer sciences and computer programming.
